What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth.

They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars.

What Is An Impacted Tooth?

Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth.

When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

Types Of Impactions

We will need to see you for a consultation to determine if you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal.

A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (panorex) will be taken to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted, if there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult it will be to have them removed.

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract for adequate cleaning of the tooth.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to partially erupt. However, the tooth cannot function properly in the chewing process, and creates cleaning problems, among others.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: There is NO space for the tooth to erupt. It remains embedded in the jaw bone or if even partially visible requires complex surgical techniques for removal. The impacted wisdom tooth may also be in an unusual position and difficult to remove. This situation can also arise when the shape or size of the jaw bone and other facial structures make removal of this tooth significantly more complex.

Patient Review by John L

I'm on the road to new found health and confidence. This is all thanks to Dr. McAboy and his wonderful staff. My breakdown is simple. The office: clean and organized. The staff: felt like friends and family. The knowledge: second nature. Doctor and assistant even had the courtesy and awareness to help calm me with words and gesture. I can't begin to explain how comforting it was to have you say "I'm sorry bud. You'll be ok" and for your assistant to just put her hand to the forearm during the procedure. It spoke volumes on the character and professionalism of your practice. Real people. Real comfort. Thank you again!

Patient Review by Barb H

My daughter just had her impacted wisdom teeth extracted June 2019. Dr. McAboy was excellent from having 'chairside' manners, being personable, thorough in diagnosing something my daughter's regular dentist did not catch, in making my daughter feel relaxed and assured regarding pain before the procedure to explaining what to expect and do after the procedure. Staff was amazing, easy going and personable and were great at their jobs. They scheduled us quick and took care of contacting insurance last minute. No waiting. Office was clean and relaxing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing experience for the situation. I had never had IV sedation before so I was a little nervous. This staff was so friendly and kind! More than once they had reassured me I was in good hands and would be looked after. It’s more than I could have asked for or expected with this extraction. It was so quick and I felt like I had all resources needed for proper care when leaving.

Patient Review by NATALIAH R

I was super super nervous to get my wisdom teeth out. Dr. McAboy respected that I wanted to know as little as possible about what they would be doing to my mouth. He came in, got me started with the iv sedation before I freaked out and jump from the chair. :(. When everything was done and left the room, I had no recollection of the procedure. It's been a day after surgery but I feel pretty good, nothing like my friends told me was going to be. I'd definitely recommend this Oral Surgeon and the assistant was extremely sweet and caring.
